Daylight Savings Time started this past weekend. Some people love the “extra” daylight. Some people dread the transition and long for a few more minutes in bed. But did you know that the time change may cause additional dangers on your Monday morning commute? One study has shown that motor vehicle collision cases increase following the time change.
Current Biology published an article about a study called “A Chronobiological Evaluation of the Acute Effects of Daylight Saving Time on Traffic Accident Risk.” The study found in part, that Spring DST can increase the risk of a auto collisions by as much as 6% in the United States. The study also found that the increased risk was more pronounced in the morning. The researchers estimated that perhaps as many as 28 fatal collisions could be avoided if there were no DST.
